Getting around Suva

Getting to Suva from Nadi International Airport

There are regular domestic flights by light aircraft between Nadi International Airport and Suva, costing from F$86 to F$103. The Suva airport at Nausori is about 30 minutes taxi or bus ride into the city itself. Alternatively, a good way to get to Suva from Nadi is via the western coastal Queen's Highway, a scenic ride first through sugar cane plantations, then along the Coral Coast down to the more rainforested regions of Pacific Harbour and then Suva. Taxis and tour buses are available, or for the adventurous traveller on a budget, the  local buses are a cheap and interesting alternative. Viti Levu (Fiji's main island) has a good bus network with a number of bus companies operating on a local level. Express buses link the main centres along the Queens Highway and on the Kings Road (which runs between Nadi and Suva on the eastern side of the island (parts of which are unsealed). The main bus stations are at Nadi, Suva and Lautoka. There are also minibuses and carriers (small trucks carrying passengers) shuttling at regular intervals along the Queens Highway. Taxis are plentiful, but drivers don't always use meters, so always remember to confirm the price in advance. Viti Levu is also easy to explore by hire car, but be careful of local drivers, as they can drive rather erratically at times! Travelling by bus affords the great opportunity of interacting with the locals, but hiring a car does give you the independence and enables you to stop along the route if you wish to enjoy the view or take a break.  Hire car companies include the major operators such as Budget, Hertz and Avis, as well as local car hire companies.

From Nadi to Suva by road

The Queens Road heads south from Nadi International airport (9km north of Nadi town), then through the Namaka and Martintar wards (shops, cafes and restaurants) before crossing the Nadi River into Nadi town itself, where the road becomes Nadi's main street. The main bus station is in Nadi Town. Turn right at the T-junction (the Hindu Temple  across the road is a colourful and popular photo opportunity!) and the Queens Highway continues to Suva, a journey by road of 3-4 hrs depending on time of day, time of week and so on.
