Indo-Fijians prepare to celebrate Diwali
Wednesday, 07 November 2007
Friday 9th November is a public holiday in Fiji. The occasion is the Hindu Festival of the Lights, also known as Diwali or Deepawali. This is a happy event on the Hindu calendar, being akin to Christmas for Christians, with presents, special baked sweets and goodies, and flashing lights adorning Indian homes and business premises.  Firecrackers are usually heard throughout the evening as Fiji's Indo-Fijian population (almost 48%) celebrate this happy annual occasion.
