Suva Shopping
Handicrafts shops, drapery shops, supermarkets, shopping malls, pharmacies. Shopping facilities are also available in major hotels within the Suva area on a 24 hour basis. Although many hotels and resorts have shopping on site, Suva city is a popular shopping destination, especially the Victoria Parade area. Jewellery, cameras, high fidelity audio equipment, clothes, handicrafts, artifacts, souvenir items, and original artworks are among the many items on offer. Shopping hours are generally from 8.00a.m. to 7.00p.m. Sunday and public holiday trading is also permitted. When in Suva, don't miss the main Suva Market located near the bus station and wharf area. Colourful and fascinating - meet the local Fijians who are always ready with a quick smile and a friendly explanation of what they are selling. Buy delicious tropical fruits in season, including pineapple, papaya, coconut, bananas and (around October/November time) delicious mangoes! The fruit here is ripened on the vine so to speak - so much better! Learn too about the different local vegetables such as dalo (taro), cassava, vudi being sold by the Fijian ladies, as well as the exotic spices and chillies sold by the Indian ladies for tasty curried meals. You'll also always see a section selling waka (dried yaqona root) which is purchased and then pounded in a mortar at the village for the daily kava drinking. If you are going to visit a village, waka is a traditional gift to present to the chief out of respect.
